EVALUATING THE IMPACT OF THE LearnDoEarn CREDENTIALING SYSTEM

Thanks to a grant from the W. K. Kellogg Foundation, an independent four-year research study will evaluate the impact of the LearnDoEarn Student Credentialing System on disadvantaged urban youth.

Evaluation mechanisms will revolve around five questions, presented below in reverse order of importance, and will be customized to the objectives of each program component:

1. Has the LearnDoEarn System increased participating students’ knowledge and skill levels on common business software applications (the Technology Challenge)?

a. Scores on the pre- and post-test for the Technology Challenge will be tracked and analyzed. Where possible, correlations will be established among populations of interest, comparing performance across genders and ethnic groups.

2. Has the LearnDoEarn System increased participating students’ financial literacy (Work the Money)?

a. Scores on the pre- and post-test for Work the Money will be tracked and analyzed. Where possible, correlations will be established among populations of interest, comparing performance across genders and ethnic groups.

3. Has the LearnDoEarn System increased the knowledge level of participating students regarding the need for rigorous courses and reliable attendance and punctuality (World Class Students and School Counts)?

a. The LearnDoEarn System will retain an assessment/survey expert to develop a pre- and post-program deployment instrument and a methodology that will assess students’ knowledge about the need for good attendance and punctuality, continued education and rigorous courses and their impact on an individual’s future employability and wages. Where possible, correlations will be established among populations of interest, comparing performance across genders and ethnic groups.

4. Has the LearnDoEarn System changed attitudes about the need for strong academic foundations, rigorous course work and solid attendance/punctuality in high school (World Class Students and School Counts)?

a. The LearnDoEarn System will retain a assessment/survey expert to develop a pre- and post-program deployment instrument and methodology that will assess students’ attitudes about the need for good attendance and punctuality, continued education and rigorous courses and their impact on an individual’s future employability and wages. Where possible, correlations will be established among populations of interest, comparing performance across genders and ethnic groups.

5. Has the LearnDoEarn System resulted in changed behavior of participating students with increasing enrollments in and completion of key mathematics and science courses and increases in attendance, where measurable (World Class Students and School Counts)?

a. The LearnDoEarn System will track course enrollments/completions in key mathematics and science courses of students in participating schools/sites. Where possible, attendance will also be tracked. Where possible, correlations will be established among populations of interest, comparing performance across genders and ethnic groups.
